City snow and ice removal budget on-par in 2019

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Just as the heat was showing signs of spring and summer, the snow came down in Medicine Hat again on Sunday.

Even though the weather hasn’t always stayed around yearly averages this year, Municipal Works with the City of Medicine Hat says their snow and ice removal budgets have.

For 2019, Municipal Works was given a $1.7 million dollar budget, to this point, they’ve used just under one million dollars of it. Jeremy Petryshyn, Operations Manager for Municipal Works believes that in terms of the snow and ice, the worst might be behind us.

“That works out to be just around 60 per cent of the budget and we tend to see more frequent and severe storms in the January, February, March’s than we do in October, November and December. So we’re tracking pretty much perfect.”

Petryshyn says that before the recent snowfall, they had already started street sweeping.

“We’ve been doing our hills, some of our main roads and the downtown and hospital areas,” said Petryshyn.

The hope for Petryshyn is that Municipal Works can start their spring program, which includes the majority of street sweeping in mid-April.

The snow and ice removal budget will not reset until 2020.
