GAME NOTES: Tigers look to build off series opening win in Sunday’s Game 2

EDMONTON, AB – The Medicine Hat Tigers won the first game of the series 2-1 Saturday night in Edmonton. James Hamblin and Hayden Ostir scored for the Tigers while rookie goaltender Mads Søgaard turned aside 49 of 50 shots faced. After tonight’s battle, the Tabbies will host the Oil Kings Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the Canalta Centre for games three and four. Both games will start at 7 PM.

Tigers vs. Oil Kings

During the 2018-19 season, the Tigers posted a 1-3-2-0 record against the Oil Kings. The Tabbies’ lone victory was January 16th, 2019, when they won 4-3 in a shootout. These two Central Division Rivals have had a few recent postseason battles. They met in the 2016 Tie Breaker game with the Oil Kings winning 6-4 and the last time they faceoff in a playoff series was the Conference Final in 2014. The Oil Kings won the series 4-1 and they went on to win the Ed Chynoweth Cup that year.

Despite firing 50 shots on net, the Edmonton Oil Kings fell 2-1 to the Medicine Tigers in the first game of their series last night. NHL Draft Eligible forward Josh Williams scored late in the game to get the Oil Kings on the scoresheet.

Tigers Talent

Mads Sogaard is the 6’7 Danish goaltender in his first season with the Tigers. The 17-year-old Aalborg, Denmark native has quick lateral movement, is incredibly patient and calm in net. He has great positioning and rebound control. Sogaard was drafted by the Tigers in the 2018 CHL Import Draft and he is the first import goaltender to play in Orange and Black since Marek Langhamer who was drafted in 2012. Søgaard is eligible for the 2019 NHL Draft and he was ranked third amongst North American goalies in the NHL Central Scouting Midterm Report.

Captain’s Corner

Captain James Hamblin was the Tigers’ top point producer during the regular season with 77 points (33G, 44A) in 67 games played. The 19-year-old Edmonton product opened the scoring for the series Saturday night by scoring a shorthanded goal early in the second stanza. Hamblin is a speedy, two-way forward who sees both sides of the puck well. The Tigers’ Captain will look to lead his team by example throughout the series with his hard work ethic.

New Kids on the Block

Logan Christensen joined the Tigers October 25, 2018, and he scored his first goal as a Tiger Oct 26, 2018, vs Regina. Christensen scored 7 goals and picked up 15 assists in 67 games played this season. Out of those 22 points, he scored 6 games and picked up 13 assists in 54 games with the Orange and Black.

Brett Kemp became a Tiger at the trade deadline and he scored his first goal for his new team Jan 11, 2019, vs Regina. Kemp scored 33 goals and picked up 27 assists this season in 64 games. In the 24 games as a Tiger, Kemp netted 11 goals and picked up 10 assists.

Tigers rookies contributed to the success of the season putting up a combined total of 15 goals and 36 assists during the regular season.
