Peewee Wildcats cap off magical season, taste provincial gold in Olds

OLDS, AB – It was one year ago that the Medicine Hat Peewee Wildcats skated off the Kinplex ice dejected, losing a provincial gold medal in overtime on home ice.

This year, redemption for the 16 members of the Wildcats as they can now call themselves the best in Alberta.

Medicine Hat scored five goals over the final 13 minutes of Sunday’s gold medal contest, knocking off the Red Deer Peewee Chiefs by a 6-1 final to capture the 2019 Peewee Female ‘A’ provincial title.

After shutting out Okotoks 5-0 in the semi-finals on Saturday, the Wildcats were able to get out to another strong start versus Red Deer.

Keyana Bert gave the Wildcats their first goal of the game less than four minutes into the first period, a 1-0 score that would hold until the third frame.

An unassisted marker from Riley Gramlich seven minutes into the third doubled Medicine Hat’s grip on the lead, before the Wildcats offence exploded a few minutes later.

Gramlich added her second of the game with 6:11 remaining in regulation to make it 3-0, which was added upon less than two minutes later by Bert’s second of the morning.

With under four minutes left on the clock, Gramlich completed the hat-trick to boost Medicine Hat’s lead to 5-0.

Red Deer was able to crack Wildcats goalie Maddy Ferguson’s shutout attempt with 3:26 remaining in regulation however, with Bailey Froese getting the Chiefs on the board.

However, Taya Christie erased all doubt before the final buzzer to send Wildcats helmets and sticks flying with a 6-1 win to bring home the banner.

The gold medal caps off a magical season on the ice for the Medicine Hat squad, finishing the regular season with an 18-1-1 record and a Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League title last weekend.
