Problems with election signs on lawns

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Four days into the campaign and candidate’s signs are now beginning to pop up on lawns throughout the area.

But, there have been posts on social-media with people saying signs have been placed on their lawns without permission.

Elections Alberta says this does happen from time to time and it’s up to the home-owner to decide what they want to do.

“They have a choice,” explained Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Drew Westwater. “It’s on their property, so they can remove it. But, as a courtesy, they can call the campaign office and say ‘I don’t want your sign on my property, why is it up there?’ and find out why they put it up there without their permission. From there, they can have the designated office come and retrieve them.”

Under the election legislation, there are no fines or penalties for improperly putting up campaign signs on private property.

“Generally, candidates want your support and so, they’re typically going to ask your permission before they put a sign on your lawn. If you’re putting a sign on someone’s lawn without their permission, they’re unlikely to support you in the upcoming election and vote for you.”

In addition, Westwater says that signs on public property must follow bylaws within their jurisdiction.

The Alberta provincial election is scheduled for April 16, 2019.
