MEDICINE HAT, AB β€” A former broadcaster accused of robbing banks in Medicine Hat has had his psychiatric assessment completed.

The assessment for Stephen Vogelsang, 55, was completed earlier this month, and was to determine if he was criminally responsible on the dates of the alleged offences.

Vogelsang, a former television broadcaster for what is now CTV Winnipeg, was arrested in Medicine Hat in October 2017 and is charged with two counts of robbery. He is alleged to have robbed a RBC branch and a BMO branch in Medicine Hat on October 19 and 20.

Vogelsang is also facing similar charges in Regina and Saskatoon.

During a previous hearing, lawyer Greg White asked for a forensic psychiatric assessment. The argument was made in court that Vogelsang was suffering from bipolar disorder and was in the middle of a manic episode at the time the offences took place.

β€œHe was assessed and the forensic assessor found that he was in his right mind on the dates of the offences,” White wrote in an email to CHAT News.

Vogelsang, who has previously elected to be tried by judge and jury, has not entered any pleas to the charges in Medicine Hat. He returns to court on April 12.
