Although the weather is heating up, there’s still a risk of slipping and falling on ice outdoors.

Ryan Klick, Emergeny Department manager of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, says that they’re still seeing patients coming in after falling on ice.

“With spring coming every year we do see people that are slipping and falling, anywhere from fractured ankles, fractured hips, broken wrists, sprains and bruises,” said Klick, “If you don’t protect yourself and you fall you can get whiplash injuries, concussions and head injuries from falling on the ice.”

Klick says to prevent slipping on ice to “make sure you’re not distracted while walking.”

“Obviously texting and walking we do see some people related to that,” said Klick.

Klick added to slow down for the conditions, walk with your hands out of your pockets, wear proper footwear and to be careful getting in and out of cars.

“Any one of us are at risk for falling if we’re going too fast and we’re not paying attention to the icy conditions,” said Klick.
