RED DEER, AB – After years of turning around the Medicine Hat Midget AA Hounds program, the ascent to the mountaintop was finally made complete on Saturday.

Jacob Milne scored twice for the Hounds in a dominant 7-1 thrashing of Red Deer CanPro Chiefs, giving the Hounds a two-game sweep to capture the 2019 South Central Alberta Hockey League championship.

In the process of clinching the SCAHL title, the Hounds swept all eight of their playoff games and outscored their opponents 41-12 on their way to the hoisting the league banner.

Red Deer struck first on Saturday with a power play goal with three minutes left in the opening frame from Kobe Karol, but Milne responded with a goal of his own 34 seconds later.

Zackery Dovichak gave the Hounds their first lead of the game early in the second, before Levi Schlosser made it a 3-1 game approaching the midway point of the period.

Medicine Hat’s turning point came with four minutes remaining before the intermission, scoring a pair of goals in less than a minute from Milne and Caleb Irvine to grow the lead to 5-1 after 40 minutes of play.

If there was any doubt, Hounds captain Carson Dingwall and sniper Ryley Manz tacked on two more goals in the third period to secure the league championship for the visitors.

Goaltender Teron Funk had a quiet night in the championship performance, stopping nine of the 10 shots he faced from the Chiefs.

Skating off the ice as the SCAHL’s top club, the Hounds won’t have too much time to celebrate the victory as provincials are on the horizon in Edmonton.

Medicine Hat will kick off their quest for a provincial gold medal at The Meadows Community Recreation Centre on March 28 against the CNHA Canucks out of Calgary.
