City of Medicine Hat undecided on adjustments to water bills for running taps

Medicine Hat, AB — The City of Medicine Hat has experienced an unprecedented amount of frozen water pipes this year.

The city has advised residents to run cold water from a tap at pencil-width to make sure their pipes don’t freeze.

The same has happened in Calgary who is changing residents water bills to account for the cost of the extra water.

In Medicine Hat, the city hasn’t made their decision yet on if they will follow Calgary’s lead.

Brian Murphy, General Manager at Environment Utilities, says that the cost of running your tap is about a dollar every day.

“That’s far less costly than having to wait for the city to respond. It’s far less inconvenient than having to wait for the city to respond to try and thaw out your water service.”

Even though it’s warming up, the ground is still frozen and may take a long time to thaw. Murphy says to keep your taps running until the city is sure the frost is out of the ground.
