Tigers comeback falls short in overtime

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Tasked with overcoming a three-goal deficit after 20 minutes of play, the Medicine Hat Tigers battled back to take a 5-4 lead late in the third period.

But the Calgary Hitmen weren’t about to back down, tying the game with under four minutes left and escaping the Canalta Centre with a 6-5 overtime victory on Wednesday night.

Vladislav Yeryomenko notched the game-winner after James Malm slipped the puck between his own legs and fed it in front. The puck ricocheted into the cage behind Tigers netminder Jordan Hollett, silencing the 3748 in attendance.

Calgary stretches its undefeated-in-regulation streak to seven games, going 6-0-1-0 in that time.

Medicine Hat has lost eight of its last nine, but have collected three of a possible four points over the last two games. They remain in the Eastern Conference’s first wild card playoff spot, two points clear of the Brandon Wheat Kings who remain outside after a loss in Lethbridge on Wednesday.

Malm, acquired by the Hitmen in a trade with Vancouver at the beginning of the season, tallied a pair of goals including the game-tying marker.

Carson Focht’s scoring surge continued into the Gas City, notching a natural hat-trick in the opening frame helping the Hitmen to a 4-1 lead. It’s the second game in a row Focht has sent caps flying. He also notched a four-goal night against Swift Current last week.

Tigers alternate captain Ryan Jevne, freshly returned for his first game after missing five due to a lower-body injury, scored a pair of goals and added a helper for the Tigers.

Ryan Chyzowski, Trevor Longo, and Corson Hopwo also lit the lamp for the Tigers, who’ve lost five of six against the Hitmen this season. Longo collected a pair of helpers to go along with his lone goal.

Mads Søgaard stopped nine of 13 shots before Jordan Hollett took over the Tigers crease to begin the second period. Hollett turned aside 15 of 17 shots fired his way.

After Calgary outshot Medicine Hat 13-12 in the first period, the Tigers poured on the offence with a 29-13 shot advantage in the final 40 minutes of regulation.

Jack McNaughton stopped 37 of 42 shots fired his way for the victory.

Medicine Hat is down to five games remaining on the regular season. Their next contest comes Friday in Lethbridge (7:00 p.m.) before hosting the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) and the Red Deer Rebels next Wednesday (7:00 p.m.)
