Kuntz named ACAC tournament all-star in final game with Rattlers

FORT McMURRAY, AB – Kendell Kuntz capped off her ACAC career the only way she knew how, leading the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in scoring to earn fifth place at the ACAC tournament.

Kuntz dropped 26 points, including eight from beyond the arc, on the St. Mary’s Lightning in her final collegiate game with the Rattlers in an 84-77 victory on Saturday morning.

She was also honoured by the ACAC following the game, not only being named Rattlers player of the game but took home tournament all-star honours as well.

Morgan Muir and Kiana Mintz followed up Kuntz’s effort with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Ranked third in the country entering the ACAC championships, the Rattlers will head home with a fifth place finish and will not advance to CCAA nationals for a second consecutive year.

However, their 18-3 record in the regular season represents their best statistical season in decades.

Men’s Basketball

A thrilling ACAC semi-final for the Rattlers men’s basketball team on Friday night, but their quest for a national berth came up just short against the top-ranked SAIT Trojans.

Fifth-year veteran Jaamel Slack had a game-high 33 points for Medicine Hat, but it wasn’t enough as the Trojans earned a 112-96 victory over the Rattlers to advance to the ACAC gold medal game.

Medicine Hat fell behind 29-16 early, but were able to make it a 10-point game at halftime trailing 56-46.

The Rattlers closed the gap to just five points in the third quarter, but the Trojans would take over for the final 15 minutes of action to advance to the ACAC final.

SAIT was able to limit Kieron Burgess to 11 points and 13 rebounds on the night, while pending graduate DeAngelo Ashley had 16 points in the loss.

While nationals are now off the table, the Rattlers will have a shot at the podium as they face the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Saturday afternoon in the bronze medal matchup.
