Fire restriction in place in Cypress County starting Friday

Feb 28, 2019 | 4:49 PM

DUNMORE, AB — Cypress County will be under a fire restriction for the next eight months.

The restriction will go into effect on Friday, and last until October 31.

Under the restriction, fire permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued.

The restriction was passed by Cypress County council last year in response to the Hilda wildfire.

The only fires permitted are internal fireplaces, incinerators on farms, burning barrels, solid and liquid fuel barbecues, recreational camp fires, wood pellet smokers and fires in approved facilities and appliances in designated camping and recreational areas.

Fireworks are prohibited under the restriction.

According to the county’s order, people who wilfully set an open fire or fires not allowed under the order, can be charged under Cypress County Bylaw and the Forest and Prairie Protection Act. If the person is an occupant of the land where the fire occurs, the costs may be placed on the tax roll and recovered the same way way taxes are collected.
