Petrick, Mortlock going for gold at Canada Winter Games

RED DEER, AB — Two local products have begun their journey to the podium at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

Redcliff snowboarder Ryder Petrick opened his Games finishing 13th in snowboardcross on Monday.

The 17-year-old member of the Elkwater Ski and Board Club has three more events this week with the potential of claiming a national medal. On Tuesday, Petrick takes Canyon Ski Resort for the parallel giant slalom, followed by slopestyle on Thursday and the half-pipe competition on Friday.

Jordan Mortlock of Medicine Hat is lacing with Team Alberta in women’s hockey. She picked up one assist in Monday’s 4-3 shootout victory over Nova Scotia to improve her team’s record to 1-1.

Team Alberta wraps up preliminary play on Tuesday, taking on Team Ontario at 7:30 p.m. from the Centrium.
