Instead of gifts for himself, one local seven-year-old made it his mission this year to collect gifts for the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society (MHWSS).

Jude Binder is a first grade at St. Michael’s Elementary School.

Last year, his mother invited him to collect items for the less fortunate in Medicine Hat on his birthday and he said no.

This year, he said yes and asked his friends for donations to the MHWSS.

“Most of the things were stuff that you could use like soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste,” explained Jude. ” I wanted to help the Women’s Shelter because I think they’re nice.”

Jude invited his entire class to his birthday party and the feedback from his friends was overwhelmingly positive.

“It was super awesome,” said Jude’s friend Quinn Wirachowsky. “It made me feel really good giving stuff to Jude and now we’re doing this for the news.”

The MHWSS said donations from kids and schools are fairly common however, a kid asking for donations for his birthday presents are fairly rare.

“It just makes you feel warmhearted and you think there’s good people out there,” said Fund Development Coordinator with the MHWSS Marion Mcroberts. “This boy must have amazing parents to instill this kind of values in him to care for others that are less fortunate.”

And that is exactly the upbringing Jude’s parents have tried to instill in his everyday life.

“Everybody feels good when they share,” said Judes mother Joleen Binder. “It’s so much more than just sharing, you have that ability to almost to provide safety and neccessities to someone that doesn’t have that available to them.”

At the young age of seven, Jude has learned what it takes to be a good samaritan within the community.

“It makes me feel good when I help someone who needs something,” finished Jude.
