Unpredictable snow system rolls into Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A thick blanket of snow has covered most of Medicine Hat thanks to a weather system that rolled in this morning.

The light, fluffy snow started falling around 7:20 a.m, and isn’t expected to stop until this evening.

The unpredictable weather system will bring about five centimetres of snow into the city.

The snow may taper off around 5 p.m. this evening, but according to the Weather Network, there’s a chance of flurries tomorrow as well.

That could prove difficult for the city’s snow removal efforts, which are scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Monday.

The plan was to actively remove snow from different areas of the city all next week. However, if resources are stretched too thin, the snow removal may be delayed.

As of now, the city plans to begin removing snow in the downtown area on Monday evening, and move on to Southridge Drive Southeast and Kingsway Avenue  Southeast, weather permitting.

The snow piled up on the sides of those roads will be collected and deposited at one of two disposal sites.

“Mostly the downtown area, there’s nowhere to plow the snow,” says Jeremy Petryshyn, manager of operations for municipal works, with the city. “So when we do remove the snow from the roadway, we have to actually haul it out because of the parking lanes there, it restricts us on where we can put snow.”

City crews still plan on being out all weekend clearing snow icing off the roads.
