MEDICINE HAT, AB— There has been a dog food recall for select products from Hill’s Pet Nutrition due to excessive amounts of vitamin D.

The contaminated product is most often found in prescription canned dog food. For more information on what products are contaminated you can visit their website.

CHAT TV called local pet stores in Medicine Hat, PetValu and PetSmart both said that they did carry the recalled food. All contaminated products have been discarded from each stores shelves. As of

Hills said in a written statement that, “in exceptional cases, continuous consumption of high levels can result in serious health issues, so we are assessing every pet parent inquiry thoroughly.”

The issue was traced back to a “specific vitamin mix” in the USA.

Going forward, the statement says that they “now require the supplier of our vitamin mix to conduct additional quality testing on every batch of this ingredient delivered to Hill’s.”

In addition, Hill’s says they will strengthen their own testing protocol for incoming ingredients as an additional safeguard.
