CALGARY, AB — The provincial government has announced a significant investment aimed at attracting high-tech companies to the province.

Premier Rachel Notley announced the five-year, $100 million investment in Calgary Wednesday morning. The goal is to help bring more artificial intelligence-based companies to the province.

“Innovation is a critical tool for competitiveness in nearly every sector of the economy, including energy,” said Notley in a statement. “By investing in technology and the talent that powers it, we are ensuring Alberta continues to be a world leader in clean, efficient energy production and that our economy is more resilient and diversified for the future.”

Among the funding announced, $27 million will go towards the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute to help them develop a program to support companies looking to build AI-support capacity in their buildings. It will also allow them to set up a new office in Calgary.

Last year, the province invested $50 million to create 3,000 new high-tech training seats at post-secondary schools in Alberta.

Since 2002, provincial governments have invested $42 million towards AI-related research in Alberta.
