SPRUCE GROVE, AB — A well-known member of the local curling community is teaming up with an Olympic medalist this week.

Vicki Sjolie, the manager of the Medicine Hat Curling Club, is throwing lead stones for Shannon Kleibrink’s foursome at the 2019 Alberta Senior Curling Championships in Spruce Grove.

The first draw is set for 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, which will see Sjolie throw Kleibrink’s first stones against Cathy Borys’ rink out of Sherwood Park.

The round-robin format will culminate with the semi-finals on either Saturday evening or Sunday morning (depending on a tie-breaker scenario), and the championship match Sunday afternoon.

Kleibrink has one of the most decorated resumes of all Alberta women’s curlers. She’s a five-time provincial champion, and reached the peak of her career in 2006, winning bronze at the Turin Winter Olympic Games.

Sjolie has a brief playing history with Kleibrink, and says she was recruited to Kleibrink’s team for her first year of seniors play.

CHAT Sports’ Mitch Bach spoke with Sjolie ahead of her trip to Spruce Grove to learn more about her team’s expectations this week, what it’s like to play under a former Olympian, and the history she has playing with Kleibrink.
