Furnaces and heaters pose fire hazard

Furnaces and space heaters are often the tools we need to stay cozy through the cold weather. They can, however, pose as a fire hazard.

Curtis Sjodin, Fire Prevention Officer with City of Medicine Hat says to make sure you’re doing a yearly check on your furnace to make sure it’s running properly.

Although Sjodin says Medicine Hat Fire hasn’t responded to a call of a fire started by a heater or furnace, they are more common in the winter than the summer.

Keeping plenty of space around your furnaces and heaters and considering a “kids-free zone” are two things that Sjodin says is a good practice, as they do reach high temperatures and can start fires.

“If you ever leave the room unplug your heaters and if you’re using fireplaces, shut them off,” said Sjodin.
