MEDICINE HAT, AB — A boost of confidence for two high school girls basketball teams with playoffs just two weeks away.

The McCoy SV Colts took top spot at the Highwood High School Tournament in High River over the weekend, coinciding with a gold medal for the Hat High JV Kwahommies at Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks.

McCoy’s young ladies went undefeated at High River. It began with a 64-point victory Edwin Parr on Friday, and followed with a 52-42 win over Brooks in Saturday’s semi-final. They hoisted the championship hardware above the host team later that afternoon, beating the Highwood Mustangs 69-39 in the final.

This comes one week after the JV Colts clinched the RVL Memorial title in Coalhurst.

The SV Colts return to league play on Wednesday in Crescent Heights and will compete in two more exhibition tournaments before opening league playoffs on Feb. 26.

The junior Kwahommies’ gold medal wasn’t the only piece of hardware collected. Forward Tori Humphries was named MVP of the tournament, according to the Hat High Mohawks.

Also worth noting, the JV Mohawks earned bronze at the Foothills Composite Tournement in Okotoks with a 99-61 victory over McCoy.

The JV Kwahommies return to action Feb. 22 in Raymond.
