MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs will begin their post-season quest on the road later this week after falling in overtime in their final game of the regular season on Sunday.

Chandler Aleman tied up their game against the Cochrane Generals with just over a minute left to force overtime, but a goal from Taylor Girard in the extra frame sunk the Cubs by a 4-3 final.

That sees Medicine Hat finish in fifth place in the HJHL’s Southern Division with a 17-17-4 record and 38 points, an improvement of 12 points from the previous season.

While they won’t have home ice advantage to begin the playoffs, they don’t have to travel too far for their first opponent.

Medicine Hat will face the Strathmore Wheatland Kings in a best-of-three series that will pit the south’s fourth and fifth place squads against each other.

Both sides split the season series at two games a piece, while the Cubs will have to adapt to Strathmore’s Olympic sized ice for Game 1 and potentially Game 3.

The opening game of playoffs will be held in Strathmore on Tuesday night, before the series shifts back to the Kinplex on Thursday for a pivotal Game 2.

CHAT Sports spoke with Cubs captain Quinten Karg and head coach J.D. Gaetan about the pending series and what it will take for Medicine Hat to advance to the second round of playoffs for the first time in six years.
