Bandits stand alone in record book after 25th straight win
BROOKS, AB – The Brooks Bandits (49-3) became the first team in Alberta Junior Hockey League history to win 25 consecutive games, beating the visiting Fort McMurray Oil Barons at the Centennial Regional Arena on Saturday night.
The win eclipsed the 24-game record streak set by Okotoks last season, with the first-place Bandits now not having lost a game since November 27th.
Simon Boyko (Mississauga, ON) deflected a puck home off an Arnaud Vachon (Ajax, ON) net front try just 3:42 into the game to put Brooks ahead, before Randy Hernandez (Miami, FL) doubled the lead at 9:29, tapping a rebound past Fort McMurray goalie Chris Curr.
Eleven seconds into the second, Fort McMurray’s Kole Gable fired a shot home from the slot to cut the deficit in half, but it would be the only blemish on the night for Brooks goalie Pierce Charleson (Aurora, ON), who stopped 18 of 19 shots for his league-leading 37th win.
