MEDICINE HAT, AB — You won’t find any baseball gloves or pitchers mounds associated with Bruce Foerster’s newest passion.

The five-year Medicine Hat Maverick has switched out his baseball cleats for kickboxing mitts, and is ready to take the ring in his first amateur fight this weekend in Calgary.

Foerster, who co-owns Temple Fitness, says he’s always had a keen interest in the sport. Only recently has he began training seriously at SACA Kickboxing, and says he’s excited to begin the next chapter in his athletic career.

The 31-year-old trains routinely with lead instructor Jamie Droeske, but credits much of his growth to sparring with fellow heavyweight Pietro de Andrade.

De Andrade, a former basketball player for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, boasts a 4-0 record in his kickboxing career. He hopes to continue his undefeated reign next month, with the end goal of eventually competing for the national heavyweight belt.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports spoke with Foerster who explains why he chose to take up this new sport and how his nerves are holding up ahead of his first bout. Plus, de Andrade gives an update to his current training regime, and Droeske discusses how these two kickboxers feed off each other in practice.
