SPCA Board of Directors delays annual general meeting

Feb 7, 2019 | 11:30 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat SPCA Board of Directors has issued a statement saying it will be rescheduling its annual general meeting.

The statement comes after allegations of a lack of transparency within the organization and the board. The statement says the annual general meeting will be delayed until a ‘later date’.

The full statement reads:

“The MHSPCA Board is in the process of hiring an outside independent consultant to review the recent allegations and therefore we find it prudent to delay our Annual General Meeting to a later date; after the completion of the investigation. An announcement on the date of the AGM will be made at that time.”

After the allegations, many Hatters were eager to have their voice heard at the AGM. As a result, reaction to the statement on social media was not very positive.

One comment reads, “More time to hide stuff and get their story straight.”

Another says: “I’m disappointed in the spca’s ways of handling the situation from the beginning. Its focus always should be about the animals welfare, seems like they are more concerned about personal egos at this point. “

“Honestly I am somewhat glad that they have hired an independent consultant because this person could find a lot more wrong with what’s going on there,” a third comment reads.

In addition, one person supported the decision to postpone the AGM.

“I do support this decision,” the comment reads. “Emotions are beyond common sense. I think time to reflect, focus, and plan will be needed.”

CHAT News asked the SPCA Board of Directors for information clarifying what an ‘indpendent consultant’ is, and whether they’ll be hiring someone in Medicine Hat, or elswhere. We received no response.

The annual general meeting was originally scheduled for February 13 at the Medicine Hat Public Library.
