Concession stand to open at Kin Coulee Park toboggan run on Sunday

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city of Medicine Hat’s Parks and Recreation Department has made several improvements to the Kin Coulee Park Toboggan Run.

The park has installed new lights on the hill for nighttime sledding, and will be launching a concession stand on Sunday, serving snacks and warm drinks for people out of the Toboggan Kitchen.

Scott Richter, parks superintendent with the City of Medicine Hat, says the lights have been on the parks and recreation department’s list for several years now.

“We’ve improved the lighting significantly from nothing to some really nice LED lighting,” he said.

“We know that Kin Coulee Toboggan Hill is used often, and we’ve seen a lot of people sledding on this hill for a number of years, and lighting is one of those things that limit people from doing it when it gets later at night. Now we’re able to offer it from 4-10 p.m.”

Richter says use of the toboggan hill has been down this year due to the mild winter conditions, but he’s hopeful snow and colder temperatures in the forecast this weekend will allow people to be able to use the hill.

The concession stand will be open from noon- 7 p.m. on Sunday, and will also be open February 9, 16, and 23, along with Family Day on February 18. Hot chocolate, coffee, hot dogs and small snacks will be available for purchase for anybody using the park.

“What we want is for people to enjoy their experience outside, so if there is a washroom, and something hot to grab to drink and eat, hopefully that experience is a little bit better,” Richter said. “I think it’s just connecting people with outside, what they’re doing and making that experience a little bit more enjoyable.”

Richter says the dates in February are the only ones so far for the concession stand. Depending on the amount of use, the parks department may open the concession stand again in March.
