SUFFIELD, AB —Firefighters from CFB Suffield responded to a fire on the base Thursday afternoon.

According to a statement from base officials, the call came in at approximately 1 p.m. The fire was located in the northwest corner of the base and was contained to the base.

The fire’s cause was related to oil and gas operations, and was contained to an area surrounding a well head.

International Petroleum Corporation owns multiple oil and natural gas wells in the area of the base. On Friday, the company sent a statement to CHAT News, confirming an incident occurred during drilling activities at approximately 11:45 a.m.

“The company immediately implemented its emergency response procedures, including mobilising emergency response teams,” the statement reads. “The company confirms that the incident has been fully resolved and that there were no injuries to any people or any damage to property or the environment. The relevant regulatory authorities have been notified.”

Cypress County Fire Services were called to the scene as a precaution to assist the firefighters on the base.

The fire did not create an explosion.

CFB Suffield also responded to reports of a loud noise and bang heard in the surrounding areas, including Redcliff, and say they were not related to the fire Thursday afternoon.

“There were other unrelated defense research activities occurring in the southern region of the training area, which may have been heard or felt outside of the base,” the statement from the base reads.
