MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat elementary school temporarily sheltered in place on Monday due to a moose in its schoolyard.

George Davison School posted on social media Monday afternoon they closed the playground and locked all doors except for the front door due to the presence of the animal on the school grounds.

The shelter in place was lifted roughly 90 minutes later after the moose left the school area.

St. Patrick’s School also issued a temporary shelter in place warning, after a moose calf was spotted near the school. The warning was issued at 2:30 p.m., and lifted by 3:10 p.m.

Earlier this month, Medicine Hat Fish and Wildlife reported they have been responding to multiple sightings of moose in the city in recent months. Currently, Fish and Wildlife say there are only two moose, a mother and her calf, currently in Medicine Hat.

The moose have primarily been seen in the Southridge and Connaught areas.

Residents are reminded to stay safe and keep their distance if they see a moose in the wild, and if aggressive behaviour is observed, to call Fish and Wildlife at 403-529-3680.
