EDMONTON, AB — The provincial government has announced a new policy making it easier for military members, including reservists, to qualify for commercial driver’s licences.

The government has expanded their current policy on recognizing driver’s testing and training requirements from the Department of National Defence to include reservists. The change was made in November.

DND training has been recognized by the since June 2015. Previously, veterans were unable to transfer their credentials once they left their careers in the military.

“This agreement serves Regular and Reserve members, including veterans, in their current and future careers,” said Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation, in a statement. “These highly skilled men and women can save time and money on training and testing and take advantage of new job opportunities as they retire from the Canadian Armed Forces and transition to new careers.”

According to the province, 803 applications from DND have been processed as of December 17, 2018.

The province states 65 per cent of the applicants were eligible for a Class 3 licence, while 15 per cent were eligible for a Class 1 or Class 2 licence.
