Vancouver’s Felip Peliwo knocks off No. 4 seed at Oracle Challenger

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Canada’s Felip Peliwo upset No. 4 seed Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a second-round match at the Oracle Challenger on Tuesday.

Peliwo, of Vancouver, came in ranked 240th in the world, well behind the 116th-ranked Lorenzi.

Each player recorded five breaks in the match.

Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., won a second-round women’s match, beating American Kayla Day 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. All seeds got byes in the first round.

It was the first action for the 79th-ranked Bouchard since losing to Serena Williams in the second round of the Australian Open last week.

Earlier, Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino lost 6-4, 6-4 to Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in a first-round match.

The 258th-ranked Zarazua converted on both of her break-point opportunities en route to the straight-sets win. The 28-year-old is ranked No. 215 in her second season back after taking nearly five years away from the tennis.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., Katherine Sebov of Toronto, Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont., and Brayden Schnur of Pickering, Ont., are expected to play matches on Wednesday.
