Medicine Hat– Financially setting up your children can already be difficult, but for parents who have children with disabilities, things can get even more difficult.

Last Saturday, Inclusion Medicine Hat held an event at the Medicine Hat College for parents who have children with disabilities. The event taught parents about planning for their dependant childrens’ future and writing wills with the children in mind.

Monica Braat, President of Inclusion Medicine Hat, says that the goal of the workshop was to educate the parents of children with disabilities on how to set up their dependant kids for success.

“I think that with a child with a developmental disability we have to think about things like who’s going to take care of our children after we go, how are they going to be taken care of financially because sometimes our children will not have full-time jobs and will not have that kind of money put away.”

Rob Siegmund has a son with a few learning disabilities that “will not allow him to act as a normal functional adult that will always need support.

“You can’t arbitrarily go ‘I’m going to split my estate, if I have four children, I’m gonna split it equally four ways.’ That’s how we would normally think because that’s the fair way. If one of those children are dependant, they need way more support than the independent children,” said Siegmund.

Donald Kolody, a lawyer, was one of the presenters at the event as he is also the parent of a disabled child.

Kolody hopes that his presentation can further the parents understanding of how to plan the estates for their disabled children.

“There is a need to be mindful of the needs of a disabled child when you plan your estate,” said Kolody.

Inclusion Medicine Hat says that they are hoping to hold three or four more events every year.
