MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs threw everything they could at Brady Newton on Friday night, escaping with two points by the skin of their teeth.

Putting 54 shots on Newton at the Kinplex, the Cubs were able to hang on for a 3-2 victory over the visiting Lomond Lakers for their second straight victory.

Medicine Hat outshot the Lakers 16-11 over the opening 20 minutes of play, however the Cubs found themselves trailing 1-0 after a goal from Christian Dees.

Continuing to pile on shots in the second period, Medicine Hat finally beat Newton 12:18 into the frame on the power play from leading scorer Chandler Aleman.

Just over two minutes later, Aleman potted his second of the night to make it a 2-1 contest, before Noah Irvine fired home his 16th of the season in the final minute of the period.

Trailing 3-1 early in the third period, Lomond was able to strike with a power play goal of their own from Wacy Sandum to cut the deficit to one.

Medicine Hat looked for an insurance maker while Newton stood his ground, however the Cubs were able to tighten up defensively enough to hang on for the two points.

Aleman added two goals and three points to his stats, upping his totals to 25 goals and 44 points through 31 games in a Cubs uniform.

Remarkably, it was Newton’s eighth game of the season with over 50 saves, while Brett Vanderveer earned his 10th win of the year with a 22-save effort for Medicine Hat.

Still holding down fourth place in the Southern Division with a 15-13-3 record and 33 points, the Cubs stayed one point up on the Strathmore Wheatland Kings with the win.

Another divisional meeting awaits the Cubs on Saturday, as they conclude their two-game home stand against the High River Flyers at 7:45 pm at the Kinplex.
