Dunmore Equestrian Centre looking for public opinion

DUNMORE, AB– If you’ve found something in your mailbox from the Dunmore Equestrian Society lately, you’re not alone.

The society has mailed a survey to about 10,000 residences in Medicine Hat and the surrounding area to gather public opinion on a planned indoor facility.

“We needed to ensure that we have community support and the only way to get that is to get some feedback from a large area.” said Justin Kraft, Director of the Dunmore Equestrian society, “we want to make sure we’re focused on the right things the community is wanting and needing.”

Right now, they are engineering and designing the facility, but the results that they should receive around mid-February may change some of their plans.

“I think we’ve had a need in this area for a long time. There is no public-use facility in the area. Obviously there’s a lot of users who would like to have one,” said Kraft.

Kraft believes the survey will determine many things for the society, including “whether the facility might be too big or too little, they’ll be able to determine the cost we need to fall within so we can be sustainable.”

The society is still looking into how it may fund the facility, but Kraft did mention that it could come from private donations, provincial funding and municipal funding.

Kraft hopes that the facility can bring in new events from across the nation, as well as deliver a place to practice and provide a backup venue in case there’s bad conditions outside during the summer.

“It would also maybe help develop some of those younger athletes that are trying to become high-level competitors,” said Kraft.

If you received a code to complete the online survey, it must be completed by the end of the month.
