Tigers claw out last minute comeback, beat Oil Kings in shootout

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers saved the best for last on Wednesday night.

Alternate captain Ryan Chyzowski tied the game late in the third period, and captain James Hamblin scored the shootout winner in a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings at the Canalta Centre.

It’s the Tigers first victory over the Central Division-leading Oil Kings in four games this season.

After the Tigers pulled goaltender Jordan Hollett, trailing 3-2 in the last minute of play, Chyzowski reignited the crowd with 34.3 showing on the clock. The alternate captain wasn’t expected to play in the game, nursing a skate laceration on his leg from Jan. 5, but was cleared to play on short notice after making significant progress over the last 48 hours.

Hamblin notched his second of two assists on the night on Chyzowski’s goal.

In a game where the Tigers trailed on three separate occasions, rookie Corson Hopwo and alternate captain Ryan Jevne also lit the lamp.

Former Tigers forward Josh Williams scored his first since being traded to the Oil Kings last Thursday to make it 3-2 in the third period.

Ethan Cap and Wyatt McLeod also scored for Edmonton, who have their three-game win streak snapped.

Williams lit the lamp with 7:15 remaining on an Oil Kings power-play. The former first-round pick was parked next to Tigers goalie Jordan Hollett and whacked home a rebound to give the Oil Kings a 3-2 advantage.

Edmonton out-shot Medicine Hat 35-28.

Tigers starting goaltender Mads Søgaard left the game with about five minutes remaining in the second period. The import goaltender appeared to be bumped into his own cage with a bunch of bodies crowding his crease and was slow to get up. Tigers trainer Mikki Lanuk tended to the ‘tender, but after testing a few stretches, Sogaard skated off on his own will and went straight down the tunnel.

After the game, Tigers head coach Shaun Clouston said they should have a clearer update to Sogaard’s status on Thursday, but noted he doesn’t believe it to be a serious injury.

Jordan Hollett took over the Tigers pipes and led the team onto the ice to start the third period.

Søgaard made 20 saves on 22 shots in just under 35 minutes of play before leaving the game. Coming in cold, Hollett turned aside 12 of 13 shots fired his way.

Dylan Myskiw stopped 25 of 28 between the pipes for Edmonton.

Medicine Hat rookie Corson Hopwo tied the game up 1-1 after Cap gave Edmonton an early lead. The 16-year-old put a nifty left-right deke on Myskiw in tight just past the midway mark of the first for his second goal of the season.

Jevne’s third period lamp-lighter also tied the game, shooting a hard wrist-shot that was deflected by an Oil Kings defender before beating Myskiw low.

Cap’s marker came 5:19 into the game after sending a long-shot on goal that appeared to be deflected in front of Sogaard. It popped overtop the 6’7” net-minders glove and into the cage.

Edmonton’s second marker broke a 1-1 tie with just three seconds left in the first period. McLeod unloaded a one-timer from the high slot moments after Liam Keeler won a clean face-off.

Edmonton continued forcing the play in the Tigers zone in the second period. Several times, Oil Kings forwards drew Sogaard out of the crease with their strong lateral movement but failed to find the mesh.

Edmonton held a 21-8 shot advantage crossing the midway mark before Medicine Hat began pouring on pressure of their own in the latter half of the frame.

The Oil Kings held a 24-13 shot advantage to compliment their 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Both teams played a very well disciplined contest. The first penalty wasn’t handed out until 9:13 into the third period; a boarding call on Oil Kings winger Zach Russell.

Medicine Hat went 0-for-1 on the man-advantage, while Edmonton went 1-1. Although the Tigers sit fourth place in the Central Division, they trail first-place Edmonton by only four points.

The Tigers return to action in Swift Current on Friday before returning home to host the Broncos on Saturday.
