MEDICINE HAT, AB — A unique kind of performance is coming to Medicine Hat, one that aims to get women out of their shells.

The Cheesecake Burlesque Revue is coming to the city on Wednesday and Thursday, aiming to spread some love and laughs to local ladies.

They’re a group of diverse women performing Burlesque, a variety show based around the art form of strip-tease.

“We try to put that on stage and give our audiences a message of body positivity and empowerment,” says Champagne Spakles, co-founder and performer with the group. “Along with a lot of fun and sparkles and laughing.”

On Thursday, the group is performing a show at the Esplanade. On Wednesday evening, the all-female group is hosting a burlesque workshop for local women called Sass Class 101.

“We are going to do some tassel twirling and some shimmying and some shaking and some bumps and grinds,” says Sparkles. “We’re going to do all that by creating our own burlesque personas.”

Nichole Braun purchased tickets for the class, and says she’s never done anything remotely like this.

“I wanted to do more things that would get me out of my comfort zone,” says Braun. “Something that was like would I normally do this, probably not.”

Kim Fiesel got tickets to the show for Christmas, and now, she can’t wait to try something new.

“I’ve never done like a burlesque dance before,” says Fiesel. “So why not try it out and maybe learn something that’s pretty cool in the process.”

The performance group is made up of women of all ages, body types and backgrounds. They try to push the idea that no matter who you are, you can do anything.

“The biggest thing with this to me is that it doesn’t matter your age, your shape, your size,” says Fiesel just go out and have a good time.”

In addition, the fact that Burlesque can include lingerie, and some other 18 plus ideas, doesn’t stop them.

“I think do you,” says Braun. “Like if people think it’s inappropriate that’s on them.”

Sass Class 101 is on at the Esplanade at 7p.m. on Wednesday, and the full performance is at 7:30p.m. on Thursday.
