Cannabis growth debate still burning

CYPRESS COUNTY– Cypress County Council discussed new bylaws regarding the growth of cannabis at the regular Tuesday meeting.

With the costs involved, some greenhouses such as Big Marble Greenhouse are not planning to grow any cannabis.

However, the greenhouse said at the hearing that they believe local greenhouses should receive the same economic opportunities as others in the country by growing cannabis.

Joy Huffadine, a resident of Cypress County, wanted the council to be careful with the new bylaws.

“I’m not against the growth of marijuana. I feel like we’re in a little bit of a cannabis gold rush right now that everybody is running on board but they’re not really taking the time to really consider the issues of it,” said Huffadine.

Other concerns were raised over the large lights and ventilation system that would need to be put in to grow cannabis.

“We live in a rural community because we don’t want to be surrounded by noise, we don’t want to be surrounded by light and all of that. I don’t think that one industry should necessarily push that,” said Huffadine.

“Odour pollution caused by cannabis production can permeate up to 1,500 yards. So that’s huge. That’s almost a kilometre and a half away,” said Huffadine.

“Cannabis is going to be a very lucrative business and everything like that but it’s going to be at the costs of others.”

The county will review feedback presented and bring the motion forward at a future meeting.
