MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Folk Music Club is looking to help Hatters beat the winter blues later this month.

The Tongue on the Post Folk Music Festival, now in its 13th year, gets underway next week, running from January 21-26

“It’s a year-long process,” said Robert Pape, executive director with the festival. “As soon as we’re done last year’s festival, we start on the next year planning and prepping, and filtering through the hundreds of submissions we have from musicians across Canada and around the world.”

Cafe concerts will begin on January 21 at various venues around Medicine Hat. The schedule can be found here, and the cafe concerts are free to attend.

The festival will also feature a Supper and Song Night on January 22 and VIP concerts in the Medalta Kiln on January 23-24, with tickets needing to be purchased in advance.

The annual Singer-Songwriter Night takes place on January 25 at Medalta.

The festival closes with its main event on January 26 at Medalta. The event will feature workshops and side stage concerts starting at noon, with the main headlining concert beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“We have three headliners this year,” said Pape. “Amy Nelson, a Calgary native. Amazing voice and guitarist. We have Zachary Lucky, who is originally a Saskatchewan boy, but lives in Ontario now. And we have Son of Town Hall, which is a real treat this year. They’re a Canadian-British duo, coming all the way over from England to put on a show for us.”

Pape says he is thankful for the support from the community over the years, and he is encouraging people who may be on the fence about attending to give it a try.

“We have a little bit of something for everyone,” he said. “We have a show going on at the Silver Buckle, a free pop-up show for a younger crowd, we have a bingo night going on this year. We definitely have a little bit of country this year, as well as the folk. There’s definitely something for everyone here to come check out.”
