MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Sport and Event Council is making a major announcement Wednesday afternoon.

The announcement is expected to be a joint collaboration between Medicine Hat and Swift Current to bring the World U-17 Hockey Challenge to both cities this fall.

A press release from the organization lists Mayor Ted Clugston, as well as Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault as taking part. The announcement will take place at the Canalta Centre at 3 p.m.

Medicine Hat previously bid for the 2018 version of the event, but lost to Quispamsis and Saint John , New Brunswick. The website DubNetwork, which covers the Western Hockey League, indicated in October that Medicine Hat and Swift Current would host the event, according to sources. A Hockey Canada document in the public domain also says the same information.

The World U-17 Hockey Challenge is one of the first major international tournaments that players under the age of 17 participate in. Notable players who have participated in the tournament include Auston Matthews, Alexander Ovechkin, Taylor Hall and Jonathan Toews.
