MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat’s provincial curling hopes will lie on the shoulders of the Denton Koch rink, as the Trevor Funk and John Stroh rinks have been sent packing at the 2019 Men’s Southern Alberta Curling Playdowns.

Koch defeated Calgary’s Cole Adams rink on Sunday morning 9-4 in eight ends to advance to the ‘C’ bracket semi-finals.

Tied 2-2 after four ends, Koch scored three points in the fifth end and a pair in the sixth to fend off the Adams rink from up the Trans-Canada Highway.

Since losing in the ‘A’ bracket semi-finals on Saturday, the Koch rink has gone 2-1 and are two wins away from securing a berth at provincials.

The same cannot be said for the Stroh rink, who were defeated by an 11-8 score on Saturday afternoon in the ‘C’ bracket by fellow Medicine Hat Curling Club member Funk and his rink.

Funk went on to defeat Red Deer’s Rick Phillips rink 8-3 on Saturday night, before falling 8-6 to Thomas Usselman and his rink in ‘C’ bracket quarter-final action on Sunday.

Koch will face Usselman at 2:30 on Sunday afternoon, with the winner advancing to the ‘C’ bracket final which will be played at 7:30 pm.

Strathmore’s Scott Garnett rink captured the first provincial berth with a 7-1 win over Team Usselman on Saturday in the ‘A’ bracket, while the second spot went to Jeremy Harty and his Calgary club.
