BASSANO, AB – The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs held all the cards on Saturday night, winning their first game of 2019 in a neutral-site clash with the upstart Lomond Lakers.

Cooper Hilworth had a four-point night for the Cubs, while Martyn Clift stopped all but one shot he faced to help give Medicine Hat a 7-1 win, their first since December 21 which halted a two-game losing skid.

Medicine Hat just needed a little over six minutes to open the scoring in Bassano, getting on the board for a 1-0 lead after Logan Robertson’s second goal of the season.

Both teams would head to the first intermission tied however, with Lomond rookie sniper Clayton Billyard picking up the puck and scoring an unassisted marker with 2:15 left before the buzzer.

After seeing his seven-game point streak snapped last weekend, Hilworth got back to his scoring ways with a goal 3:39 into the second period from Jareh Gray to put the Cubs back in front.

Lomond kept it a one-goal game for most of the second period, however the Cubs exploded for two goals over a span of four minutes from Noah Irvine and Quinten Karg to grow Medicine Hat’s lead to three.

Tristan Stensrud added another power play goal for the Cubs 2:30 into the third period to make it a 5-1 contest, before Mackenzie Fritzler potted his 14th of the season six minutes later.

Hilworth put a cherry on top of the Medicine Hat win with his second of the night with 2:41 left in regulation, recording his fourth point of the evening in the process.

Fritzler, Gray, and Chandler Aleman joined Hilworth with multi-point showings, while Clift kept his undefeated record alive with 19 saves on 20 shots.

Moving back above a .500 record with the win, the 14-13-3 Cubs remain one point ahead of Strathmore for fourth place in the Southern Division after the Wheatland Kings knocked off High River in overtime on Saturday.

Medicine Hat and Lomond will meet for the rematch at the Kinplex on Friday night at 7:45 pm, before the Cubs host High River the following evening.
