Oil Kings victorious over Tigers in Williams’ return to Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT – A splendid effort from Mads Sogaard forced overtime for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night, but former Tiger Josh Williams and the Edmonton Oil Kings had the last laugh.

Edmonton scored 2:11 into overtime on Saturday, picking up the extra point in a 2-1 victory over the Tigers at the Canalta Centre.

Edmonton controlled most of the play in the first period but it was Medicine Hat netting the first goal of the night.

With a little over seven minutes left before the intermission Linus Nassen let a shot go from the point, which was tipped by Tyler Preziuso for his 17th goal of the season.

Scoring was hard to come by for both teams in the second period, as goaltenders Sogaard and Dylan Myskiw were up to the task.

Edmonton finally broke Sogaard’s clean sheet 11:19 into the middle stanza, with David Kope receiving a pass from below the goal line from Andrew Fyten and outwaiting the Tigers netminder.

Tied 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of play, neither the Tigers nor the Oil Kings were able to finish off the contest in regulation.

Just one shot was recorded in the extra frame, a wrister from Vince Loschiavo midway through the fourth period past Sogaard to secure the victory for the Edmonton side.

Making his return to Medicine Hat since last Thursday’s blockbuster deal, Williams was held off the score sheet and had four shots for the Oil Kings.

As for former Edmonton sniper Brett Kemp, he was also held pointless against his former team one night after recording his first two goals as a Tiger.

Sogaard stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced on Saturday, re-joining the Tigers after his two-week stint with Team Denmark at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships.

Losing just their second game of the season in overtime, the Tigers now hold a record of 23-16-2-2 and are four points up on the Calgary Hitmen for the first wildcard spot.

The rematch will be played on Wednesday between the Tigers and Oil Kings, with puck drop at the Canalta Centre planned for 7:00 pm.
