MEDICINE HAT– If you’ve been experiencing the back to work blues lately, you’re not alone.

“Nobody likes to get up in the morning and go back into their regular routine. We kind of get really relaxed on our days off on the holidays,” said Ana Schlosser, a local psychologist.

In a poll conducted by Halo Top Creamery, 64 per cent of Canadians polled said that January was their least favourite month of the year.

“I can definitely understand why that would be. I think for a lot of people the new year brings on a natural tendency to self-reflect or to reflect on their life in general, looking at some of the areas that they have some problems with,” said Schlosser.

Schlosser believes that there are many factors that can attribute to the poor mood, one of them, is financial.

“A lot of people go over-budget for spending or they have a hard time dealing with the fact that they didn’t have the money to celebrate the holidays the way that they had wished,” said Schlosser

And when it comes to the weather, the cold can contribute to a poor mood as well.

“When it’s cold definitely for sure people don’t want to go out. So they’re moving around less than they normally would,” said Schlosser

Some more factors that can contribute to a bad mood is our increased intake of sugar over the holidays, struggles to get back into a regular routine and a poorer diet which includes an increase in drinking, “Alcohol is a huge one just because alcohol is a depressant in general but we use alcohol a lot to celebrate,” said Schlosser

Beyond having a good diet and getting enough sleep, Schlosser sees another technique that people can use to get them through the day, “Making plans for lunch with a buddy, or making plans before or after work to do some sort of movement or exercise, it gives you something to look forward to.”
