Medicine Hat Kennel Club looking for new show location

MEDICINE HAT, AB — For nearly 50 years, the Medicine Hat Kennel Club has been holding all-breed dog shows in Medicine Hat.

This year, the show is in danger as their old location at Medicine Hat College will be under construction when the show intends to run on July 19-21.

Finding new grounds has proven to be difficult for the club, needing space for 200 dogs per show.

“We need about 6,000 square feet to put up tents if there’s no arena or covering area,” said Della Kyncl, an event organizer. “We need to look at fire lanes and RV parking as well as personal vehicle parking and so far I haven’t been able to find any place that has been able to accommodate all of that.”

In an attempt to gather suggestions for the location of the show, Kyncl put out a Facebook post onto the Medicine Hat Buy, Sell, Trade page. So far, there has been lots of responses.

“There have been a few that were thinking outside the box and that’s helping me a lot. So I have actually sent out e-mails and messages this morning with about seven or eight new locations. So I’m hoping that something comes from that,” said Kyncl.

“I have tried city-run parks, golf courses, RV parks and a few other places.”

The all-breed dog show presents an opportunity for exhibitionists to improve their standing to try and win a Canadian championship.

“Most of them that will be campaigning their dogs know where they’re sitting in the standard regarding to top dog in Canada so every show counts. Anyone campaigning will hit every show they can,” said Kyncl.

“It’s always been a great show and we didn’t wanna lose it and this year would’ve been their last chance if they wouldn’t of had one, the Canadian Kennel Club would’ve cancelled the dates and that would’ve been the end of it.”
