Children’s Wish Foundation makes local boys dream come true

Medicine Hat, AB – Six-year-old Dexter Green had his dream turn into reality in early December, all thanks to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Little Dexter had the opportunity to spend a week down in Orlando, Florida with his parents Derek and Amy and his sister Bayleigh.

Dexter suffers from a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, which has required him to eat through a feeding tube since birth.

His mother Amy said they applied a couple years ago to the Children’s Wish Foundation and were approved almost immediately.

“When the wish was granted two-years ago, we weren’t able to take Dexter at that time due to his medical complications,” explained Amy. “Thankfully, you have five-years from when your wish is granted to take your trip and this year, Dexter was feeling good enough to go.”

Amy then stated that Dexter had one thing in mind when they made their way down to Florida.

“His favorite character is Spider-man. His bedroom is covered in Spider-man posters, bedding and he has all the toys. That’s really his favorite super-hero and he wanted to meet him. Then of course Disney is there and he wanted to go meet Mickey Mouse and all the characters.”

Due to his condition, Dexter has always been known to be an anxious boy.

“He was definitely nervous before we went down there. We had to watch a bunch of Youtube videos on the different rides and different characters around the parks, just to kind of ease his anxiety a little bit.”

Once he was down there though, Amy said he loved almost every second of it,

“He loved the Seven-Dwarfs mine train ride. We went on that twice, so that was one of his favorites. Meeting Spider-man was his highlight though. We had a private one-on-one with him and some other characters and he just loved that. It was nice to see him smiling and dancing, basically just being a typical little boy.”

And believe it or not, Amy said Dexter is actually a little less anxious about life now all thanks to the trip.

“It was just a nice bonding experience to see Dexter kind of blossom and go out of his shell a lot. It was so wonderful to see.”

As a mom, Amy said it was wonderful to escape what can be a sometimes hectic life medical-wise.

“Having kids with medical issues is a task for everyone in the family. Me as a mom, I do most of the medical appointments to Calgary and stuff like that. So, it was just nice for all of us to forget about that and just play, be silly and have no worries.”
