MEDICINE HAT, AB — Stats Canada says Alberta is one of the largest consumers of marijuana, but what about growing it?

Cannabis seeds haven’t been legally available in Alberta, until now.

Anyone looking to grow their own cannabis plants can purchase two types of seeds on the AGLC’s website.

Canopy Growth is supplying the seeds in packages of four for $60.

There’s two kinds include one with more THC, and one hybrid between THC and CBD.

Although seeds are now on the market, the AGLC hasn’t seen a huge demand for them from consumers, or a push to supply them from producers.

“It’s just that it’s not their most popular product,” says Chara Goodings, AGLC senior communications “It’s really for a niche market so not a lot of licenses producers are putting too much effort into supplying seeds.”

Despite that, Goodings says the legal access to seeds will be positive in beating out the black market.

“I mean that’s the whole reason why cannabis is legalized to begin with, is to be able to push out the illicit market and that includes seeds so those that want to grow them absolutely we hope they purchase them from a licenses retailer.”

In the meantime, Alberta has begun to produce a little bit more cannabis.

“We’re seeing a bit more product coming in on our regular basis,” says Goodings. “Nothing really major but it is starting to pick up a little bit and we’re really hoping that Health Canada licenses more producers so that we will have access to more product.”
