Yellow-vest protest continues this weekend

Medicine Hat, AB – After finishing 2018 strong, the yellow-vest campaign will continue their momentum into 2019 this weekend in Medicine Hat.

Protesters will line the streets outside of the old Montanas location on Dunmore Rd. from 12-2 p.m and they will be taking donations for the Medicine Hat Food-Bank.

Although a lot of the conversation at these rallies has surrounded the energy sector, protesters say this is about much more than just the oil and gas industry.

“People are waking up to the fact that their governments don’t represent them,” said rally-organizer Cindy Parker. “Trudeau has already taken note. He’s mentioned the yellow-vest protests in Canada. The reality is Canada is ours. It’s time for Canadians to have their voices heard.”

Here in Medicine Hat, the rallies have been growing in popularity over the past couple weeks.

The first rally held outside of City Hall had roughly 10 people picketing the streets.

From there, the protests grew to roughly a couple hundred people at each of the following events.

Last weekend, Oilfield Wives of Canada representative Kasandra Sajinovic spoke to nearly 170 people lined up outside of Tim Hortons on 13th Ave.

“We need to start standing up and being more vocal about what we all believe in,” said Sajinovic. “I want to let everybody know that these protests aren’t for nothing. Eventually change will happen, it’s inevitable.”

It’s also worth noting that a truck convoy is scheduled to leave Alberta on February 15th and truckers will make their way to Ottawa to send a direct message to the Liberal Government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

There has been no official word yet on whether or not any Medicine Hat businesses will be taking part in the February convoy to Ontario.
