No word yet on future development for Arena

MEDICINE HAT, AB — More than 18 months after it officially closed its doors, there is still no plan in place for the former Medicine Hat Arena.

The former home for the Medicine Hat Tigers closed at the end of July 2017 after 47 years of operation.

Since the closing, the site has sat vacant, as the city’s land and business support department has worked to prepare the land for sale and redevelopment, as indicated in the River Flats Development Plan.

Jane Zwicker, manager of marketing with the city’s land and business support department, says the department brought forward a plan for subdivisions and demolition.

Zwicker says the demolition plan is where things have been held up for future development.

“The cost estimates for the demolition and subdivision came in higher than anticipated, so senior administration sent land and business support away to come up with some options to try and make it align with the River Flats Area Development Plan,” she said.

Zwicker says the department is hoping to have a plan to city council for the building in the spring.
