Yellow-vest protest scheduled for Saturday

Medicine Hat, AB – The fourth and final yellow-vest protest of 2018 in Medicine Hat will be taking place tomorrow (Dec. 29).

The political movement originated in France earlier this year, after French residents demanded such things as lower taxes on fuel.

That movement then made its way overseas to Canada and rallies have been popping up weekly across the nation.

Here in the Hat, the first yellow-vest protest started with ten people outside of City Hall.

Last weekends rally, which was in conjunction with the truck convoy, had roughly 450 people attend.

The protests have proven to garner attention, as MLA Drew Barnes and Federal MP Glen Motz have separately attended the last two events here in Medicine Hat to show their support.

Rally organizer John Munn said he is hoping for the same turnout and support from the community come Saturday.

“It’ll be Saturday from 12-2 p.m at the Tim Hortons on 13th avenue. The south side of it in the big parking lot there. We’re hoping to get as big of a crowd as we had last week, but we’re not sure.”

In addition to the protest, Munn added protesters will be taking donations for the food-bank.

Munn then stated there will be a speaker attending the rally from the Oilfield Wives of Canada.

“Come out and see us, come out and talk to us. We have our manifesto and we’ll happily give you one of those and you can read through it. It has what we believe in and what we’re trying to accomplish. Bring a sign, bring a flag. Come out and be heard.”

And just like before, the message from protesters has continued to be the same.

“We’re trying to get the government to take notice and get pipelines built. It’s time people get back to work in this country. The oil and gas industry in this country employs thousands upon thousands of people.”

Dunn then furthered his statement.

“The energy sector touches everyone in this country whether you realize it or not. You take oil and gas out of your life and you won’t have much left.”
