Political science instructor weighs in on federal funding

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The federal funding announcement on Tuesday of $1.6 billion to help the oil and gas industry seemed to fall flat in Alberta.

Many say what was given, isn’t what’s needed.

Jim Groom is a political science instructor at Medicine Hat College. He doesn’t believe there was much consultation with the provincial government prior to the announcement, or with the industry itself.

He said it seems the oil and gas sector is pushing back, saying it’s not markets that are needed, but instead ways to get product to markets.

“It’s a little bit like dressing up a nice turkey dinner for supper and delivering it to a vegan house and having the family say ‘hey, thanks, but it’s not what we needed right at the moment’,” he said. “So there’s a lot of disconnects there and shows the tone-deafness of the Liberals […] in Ottawa again.”
