IRVINE, AB — The South Alberta hockey Academy celebrated what they accomplished on Tuesday.

The academy, which was spearheaded by Willie Desjardins and the Prairie Rose School Division, held a three-on-three hockey tournament at the Irvine Arena. Students from Irvine School, Parkside School, Foremost School and Eagle Butte High School took part in the tournament.

“We’ve got close to 70 hockey players that are partaking in our academy this year,” said Ken Dzikowski, one of the coaches at the academy. “We’re just celebrating getting our academies together with a three-on-three tournament, and an adult-teacher-student symposium.”

With the first four months in the books already, the academy is already looking at ways they can grow the academy in 2019, including the possibility of an all-girls team.

“I know we have five or six girls at the Irvine academy, and we have four or five girls at the Foremost academy,” said Dzikowski. “Girls are a big part of our program. We’re focused on developing every hockey player, not just certain skill levels. We have kids ranging from minor peewee to Triple-A Midget. “We’re enthused, and we’re excited to work with everybody.”

Dzikowski adds the Academy is also looking at partnering with Medicine Hat Minor Hockey for further development opportunities.
