MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service has charged a 24-year-old man with murder after a man’s body was discovered in a downtown apartment on Thursday.

Donald Goodwill has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in a Saskatchewan court on Monday, and will be transported to Medicine Hat in the following six days to face a judge in Alberta.

The investigation began Thursday after police responded to an apartment in Mayfair Manor at approximately noon in response to a call to check on a missing person. The deceased man was located in the apartment, and police considered his death suspicious.

The male’s body was transported to Calgary for an autopsy. Police are now treating the man’s death as a homicide.

According to the police service, the medical examiner could not positively identify the deceased at this time.

“We haven’t yet positively identified the victim,” says Inspector Tim Mcgough with the Medicine Hat Police Service. “The identification goes through various processes, the medical examiner wishes to do another process to determine the identity which is obviously crucial in this type of investigation.”

Police say the victim and the accused are known to each other, and as a result, there are no public safety concerns at this time.

“They’ve known each other, the both used to live in Saskatchewan just outside of Regina,” says Inspector Mcgough. ”The victim now lives in Medicine Hat and the accused lives between Calgary, Regina and Medicine Hat.”

Police are expected to release more information on Monday.

The Major Crimes Section is investigating. Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is asked to call the Medicine Hat Police Service at 403-529-8481 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
