Be Christmas tree safe this holiday season

Medicine Hat, AB – Each year, firefighters throughout North America respond to roughly 210 structure fires caused by Christmas trees.

When you combine trees with faulty lights or open flames from a candle, dry Christmas trees can ignite very quickly.

While celebrating this holiday season, Albertans are reminded to keep fire safety in mind so their families stay safe.

Your homes may be bustling with activity and it’s easy to get distracted. When cooking, keep an eye on the stove and other hot appliances. Blow out candles before going to bed and do not overload electrical outlets with Christmas lights, cellphone cords and other devices.

“With the busy holiday season upon us, I urge folks to keep fire safety top of mind. Nothing is more important as we gather with family and friends than making sure we all stay safe,” said Minister of Municipal Affairs in a press-release.

Although Christmas tree fires are not common, 1 of every 31 reported home structure Christmas tree fires results in a death, compared to an average of 1 death per 141 reported home structure fires.

People should plan and practise a fire escape plan that has two exits. Make sure your home is equipped with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that work. Test them monthly and replace batteries annually.

The Medicine Hat Firefighters are recommending that you keep your Christmas trees away from heat sources and exits. Watering your tree daily will help prevent it from becoming dry and hazardous.

Officials say there are a few things you can watch out for this holiday season:

-Use extension cords wisely – avoid overloading and placing them under rugs.

-Water your Christmas tree.

-Keep (or place) space heaters at least one metre from curtains, furniture and decorations, and turn them off when not in use.

-Safely stub cigarettes; a large, closed ashtray is recommended.

-Test and dispose of any frayed cords or light-bulbs on decorative lights.
